Packets Up! Tips for Creating a Safer Home Environment

This post is in partnership with the American Cleaning Institute. However, all opinions are my own.

We recently renovated our laundry room and while we put a lot of attention towards functionality and style, we also took some time to consider the safety of our laundry room for our kids and any other littles visiting our home. Just like they say, there’s nothing faster than a toddler who just grabbed something they are not supposed to have and there are plenty of things in the laundry room you probably don’t want them to have. Liquid laundry packets are one of these things, and we are so happy to be part of the Packets Up! Campaign to help parents get the information and resources they need to create a safer laundry room environment.

You probably safely store many other household cleaners, but it is commonly forgotten to treat liquid laundry packets with this same care. In our old laundry room, we didn’t have a ton of storage space and I know the packets got left out on reachable spaces far too often. I struggled to find ways to store our laundry detergent. While almost all my kids are old enough now to know better, we have cousins and friends coming and going constantly and they may not. The Packets Up! campaign, which was launched by the American Cleaning Institute, provides wonderful tips and helpful resources that I have now incorporated into our laundry room.

Tips for Creating a Safer Home Environment

  • Place your liquid laundry packets up in a high up cabinet, if available.
    • Even if you don’t have a cabinet, place the liquid laundry packets into a bin (you can add other household products and cleaners, too!) and put it in an out-of-reach place
  • ALWAYS leave detergent packets in their original containers.
  • Double-check that you close and seal liquid laundry packet containers after you use them.
  • Don’t store detergent packets in glass jars. This makes them visible to little ones and could catch their attention, which you want to avoid. Of course, you can still store other things like clothespins in your cute decorative jars!
  • Bag all of your household cleaners separately when you are at the grocery store. That way you know exactly where they are and you can put them away safely right when you get home. This will decrease the change of an accident from happening!
  • Store the Poison Help Line number (1-800-222-1222) on your phone and have it written down on a list of important phone numbers that you leave somewhere in your home. You should always point this list of phone numbers out to babysitters!
  • Teach your little one about safety! It is our job as parents to make sure our children understand the boundaries that we set for their safety. You can download Activity Sheets from the American Cleaning Institute to help you out!

Put the Packets Up!

With these few simple steps, you can avoid any accidents involving liquid laundry packets! Whether it is your own baby, a nephew, your friend’s child, or even a puppy or other pet, you are keeping them safe by putting your liquid laundry packets up in a safe spot.

Do you have any other household safety and laundry tips? We would love to hear about them in the comments so that we can add them to this post and share them with other mamas!
