Ranjit OKS maternity care leave for women soldiers of all ranks

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday approved a proposal to grant maternity leave to women officers of all ranks in the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, irrespective of their service. The leave can be taken anytime during the service period, and women officers will have to intimate their commanding officer one month in advance about proceeding on leave. It will be in addition to the child care leave already granted to the women officers. The move is seen as a significant step towards gender equality in the armed forces and will boost the morale of women soldiers. Earlier, maternity leave was granted only to women officers of the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and equivalent in the Army, Commander in the Navy, and Wing Commander in the Air Force. The decision to extend maternity leave to women officers of all ranks was taken after considering the recommendations of the three service headquarters. The proposal was then approved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The new policy will be implemented with immediate effect. It is expected to benefit a large number of women officers in the armed forces. The armed forces have been taking several steps in recent years to improve the working conditions of women officers. In 2019, the government had approved a proposal to grant permanent commission to women officers in all 10 streams of the Army. This was a major step towards gender equality in the armed forces. The government has also been working to increase the representation of women in the armed forces. In 2018, the government had set a target of inducting 20% women officers in the armed forces by 2030. The new policy on maternity leave is another step in this direction. It will help to attract and retain more women in the armed forces and will contribute to the overall modernisation and efficiency of the forces..
